What does your name mean?

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Today I received a message on Facebook that said to go to Urban Dictionary, type in your first name, then paste the first result as your status. Supposedly it will describe your personality to a T.  I hate forwards with a passion, but decided to check it out… So I went to the site, typed in Josh and the result was:

Josh is a fun loving guy really funny and can make anyone laugh. He is very quiet at first and seems shy but when you get to know him you will fall in love. He has very good style and always looks handsome. He also always smells really good :)

Does this describe my personality to a T? I won’t say. But, I did type in some of my friends names and the descriptions were spot on!

Life is like a Rubik’s Cube

Rubiks CubeA few days ago I was discussing a project with a colleague at work, and saw a Rubik’s Cube sitting on their desk. I started fidgeting with it as we were talking and when we were done I took it back to my desk. Until today I had never spent more than a few minutes at a time playing with a Rubik Cube.

As I sat, played, struggled with the Cube I suddenly realized that the Cube posed many of the same challenges that life does.

I found the following parallels:

  • Sometimes life and problems have to get messier and more complicated before you can solve them.
  • Each and every decision you make will have a direct impact on past, present and future decisions.
  • There is a very fine line between creating complete chaos and solving a complex problem.
  • Only after a great deal of thought, determination and concentration can you really come up with the best solution.
  • Problems can not be solved in a linear fashion; meaning you can not solve one problem at a time, you need to be capable of handling many situations at one time.
  • There is no such thing as a short cut… in life you can not rip the stickers off the cube, put them in place and claim victory.

This brings up the question… If someone is very good at solving a Rubik Cube does that make them good at solving lifes problems? Doubtful, but it can’t hurt.

Joshua, the 4th most popular name

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Each year it seems like more and more children are being named Joshua or Josh, so I did a little research to see what I could find. Thankfully, the United States Social Security Administration tracks all of this information. In the table below I show the percent of total males named Joshua in a given year, along with the percentage of males that were named Joshua in that year.

  • In 1960 Joshua was the 453rd most popular male name in the united states. That year parents named 0.0146% of male children Joshua. That is only 146 out of 1,000,000 children.
  • Compare 1960 to 1985 where Joshua was the 4th most popular name. That year 2.1946% of male children were named Joshua, that is 21,946 out of ever 1,000,000 children.
